Burrows seeks information about the artifact, eventually meeting Dr. On his return, Burrows finds the man is dead. When Burrows lands on the planet New Detroit, a man hires him and gives him a mysterious artifact. The game begins with a mysterious drone attacking shipping in the system. But between plot missions or even while being on a mission the player can follow his own interests. The plot itself can only be played straight, one mission after another in a preset line. The missions usually consist of plain combat, escorting other ships while combating enemies or commodity delivery including smuggling while combating / escaping enemies. Successful completion of missions results in monetary award, which allows better ship weapons and equipment to be purchased.ĭuring the plot, the player meets fixers, often representing one of the factions above, who assign the player missions in their interest in exchange for money or helpful information. Alternatively, the player may choose from randomly generated non-plot missions from a mission computer. If playing as a merchant, the player must make a profit from price differences of commodities on different planets or stations.

The player may conduct his own business as a merchant or fight in combat for non-plot missions provided by the above factions. How the members of the factions react is not only pre-set but depends also on the player's actions. Some of them attack the player on sight, some are allies of the player. The Gemini sector is frequented by seven factions: merchants, bounty hunters, retros, pirates, militia, the Terran Confederation and the Kilrathi.

When buying or selling and taking missions from the mission computer, in-game menus are used. On planets and bases a static overview / first-person-view is used to show the rooms and interact with people. Space combat simulation is similar to the style of other Wing Commander games of its time.
#WING COMMANDER PRIVATEER GEMINI GOLD CODE#
It's silly to expect non-programmers to write Python code for missions. When flying, the main view is a first-person-look from inside the cockpit onto the cockpit screens (HUDs) and the space before the ship. Taking something like PCS2 from Freespace 2 and adding support for Vegastrike formats would be a good first step, and a FRED clone for mission writing would open up the engine for editing. Art to asset workflow is abysmal at the moment. Really you need 3-4 programmers to modernise the engine and get editing tools made like Freespace 2 has. But it's something a team of people need to build. I also took a look at making a FRED style editor for the engine.
#WING COMMANDER PRIVATEER GEMINI GOLD CRACK#
I took a crack at fixing it up a while ago but my work stalled. Most of the library support in Vegastrike is outdated, ffmpeg versions have moved on, same with libPNG and other libraries. As stated earlier Vegastrike needs an AI overhaul, but there also needs to be major updates made to the code base. It should be simple enough to get into the C++ code for the map screen and fix it to be like the privateer nav screens.

There were changes made to the Vegastrike engine by other teams which negatively affected the Wing Commander features of the engine. Sadly, for what I want to do, no engine really exists at this point except maybe Unity, but I don't want to invest the time into learning it. It does however have a complete online gameplay system including online trading, comms, multiplayer etc. It never delivered on the editing tools which are needed to make a game with this level of complexity. The Vegastrike engine needs a lot of overhaul work for the modern era. We were basically just using the setting and had plans to do our own stories. The Privateer campaign did not need to be a part of the game, the point of it being there was just to act like a tutorial, players would then have an option to join the military at Perry Naval base, or go run missions etc in the expanded universe.

The aim of it was to make a privateer style expanded game with ships from 1-3/Academy/Armada set during 2669. There is no project called "Privateer Remake" at wcuniverse.sf.net Wing Commander Universe was my project.
